The Stairway: 10 year anniversary and retrospective
Hello, everyone!
Today is the day! Today, July 6th of 2025, is the 10th anniversary of The Stairway!
I just finished writing a long update post for one of my current projects, Stories of the Dreaming World, where I’ve already talked about this, but I figure this would be the best place to write a bit more about the game whose actual anniversary is today.
To celebrate, I’ve released a special story in Stories of the Dreaming World that is closely related to The Stairway. If you enjoyed The Stairway and want to see a little bit more about it, I recommend checking it out! I wanted to finish an illustration for it too, but it’s still on the works.
So yeah. Ten years! I guess the development itself started even sooner, so my years as a game dev are a bit over a decade now, but it still feels like a lot. When I started making this first game, I already knew I wanted to dedicate myself to making games. I really liked RPG Maker games back then (and still do!), and learning how to make them has been one of the best decisions of my life. Every once in a while I’ll finish playing a game, and still be hit with the realization of how much I love experiencing stories this way…
A first project is usually never the best, and when I finished The Stairway, I remember not being fully satisfied with it. But despite that, it still has a place in my heart. A first project is always special, and The Stairway is very special to me despite its faults. I wouldn’t be where I am without having made it, and every person who has told me they have enjoyed it, that it gave them a moment of peace, that they related to it… has made me more and more glad to have created it. During all this time, The Stairway has been downloaded over 28.000 times, without counting the translations. To this day, it’s still my most played game. Wow! Thank you so, so much for giving The Stairway a chance. It means a lot to me, and even more to the me from ten years ago who hesitated so much to release this game.
Looking back, this past decade has been a good journey! Not only did I learn to use RPG Maker and released seven projects, but also got a game development degree (gamer university as I like to call it). I made some projects there in Unity too, and improved my art and writing a lot. There’s a lot of small RPG Maker projects I haven’t released anywhere, but that has also added to my experience. At the moment, I’m also working on a game in Godot (my current main focus!). And a lot more stuff!
For this next decade, I hope to:
- Finish even more of my stories. As many as I can!
- Try making something with more gameplay.
- Making a horror game at some point.
- Participate in more game jams.
- Finally start making commercial games.
I have many more stories to tell, especially now that even The Stairway has become part of something bigger. I hope I can keep improving more and more with what I make, and be able to show it proudly to the world!
If you want to keep up with what I’m working on at the moment, I write monthly update posts on my ko-fi! I talk about my current and future plans, and what progress I have made during the month.
Thank you so much for playing my games! Here’s to many more years!!
